Jovoni Johnson: Quarterback of the Wampus Cat Football Team, President of Conway High School, and amongst many other things, a loving son and friend to all. Now as a Senior, Johnson is close to finishing his high school career with exceeding accomplishments on and off the field.

As the football season unwinded, Johnson started getting offers to play football from colleges nation-wide with a total of 12 different places. Most were in-state such as Arkansas Tech University, Ouachita Baptist University, and University of Central Arkansas.

He also received offers from out of state colleges such as Delta State University (Cleveland, Mississippi), Rice University (Houston, Texas), and Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts).

After several weeks of contemplation and decisive decision making, Johnson decided to commit to Rice University to further his academic and athletic career.

Several factors played into his decision, but the most important one being the feeling he got when he visited.

“My visit to Rice University was much different than the rest. It felt more personal and I seemed more than just another recruit, it’s like they really wanted me there.”

During his visit to Rice, Johnson got the opportunity to sit down with two successful alumni’s specialized in law and economics, both in which Johnson is interested in.

He is currently serving on Teen Court, a local program in Arkansas that allows high school students to learn the ways of court and handle real-life cases.

When asked what his plans are for after college, Johnson seemed very dedicated and committed on attending Harvard for Law School. He wishes to complete his education before even considering playing football professionally.

Balancing sports and academics is tough but Johnson learned to manage his time wisely throughout his 4 years at Conway High. Now, he has picked the right school that will challenge him in both fields. Rice, a private university, is ranked 14th in the nation as the best school for academics. The Rice Owls will drive Johnson’s passion for football as they play against difficult teams and build their love for the sport.

As a president, a quarterback, and a well-rounded individual, Johnson has made all of us very proud to call him a friend, a student, and a classmate. But most of all, we are glad and honored to call him a Wampus Cat.

As he moves on from a Cat to an Owl, we wish him good luck and nothing but success for his future career at Rice University!
