Alexander O’Connor, better known as Rex Orange County, released his third studio album on October 25. The album titled “Pony” contains songs ranging from pop tunes to melodic ballads. His last two albums, “Apricot Princess” and “Bcos U Will Never B Free” were beautifully executed and this newest album does not fall short. Rex Orange County is known for his emotionally happy tunes and storytelling lyrics.

The songs on the album discuss everything from love to his regrets he’s had in his life. The album opens with a song called “10/10.” This song is about his goal to improve who he is as a person. The use of intricate chords and musical progressions gives Rex a very unique sound. He uses electronic vocals to emphasize the feeling of not being truly himself these past years.

The album ends with a track titled “It’s Not The Same Anymore”. This song discusses his realization that things between him and this other person have completely changed. The simple guitar melody that opens the song gives an initial melancholic mood. Later in the song the tone changes and the drums are added in to give a contrasting sound to show how he struggled trying to deal with this change.

This album tells a story of discovering who you are, love, heartbreak, and happiness. Rex Orange County is notorious for his intriguing upbeat songs but delicate meaningful lyrics and this album perfectly embodies that. The songs on this album have an optimistic sound but the lyrics tell the story of things he has been through. At first they sound just like your everyday pop song but when you really listen to the lyrics in each song you can hear the stories he is revealing to the listeners.
