The CHS Spanish Club started off the year with a meeting celebrating Kings Day (El Día de los Reyes) this January 27 in Señora Carson’s room. Kings Day is actually celebrated January 6, but due to periods of virtual schooling, the fiesta had been postponed. Members learned about the origin of the holiday and the symbolism behind la rosca. “The day is to celebrate the birth of Jesus with more focus on the Three Wise Men,” said Emma McClurkin, a new Spanish Club member. La rosca is a sweet bread shaped in a circle, topped with candied fruit and icing. The pastry symbolizes King Herod’s crown and baked inside are several tiny, baby Jesus dolls. The tradition is to pick out your piece of rosca and if you find a baby Jesus in your slice, you have to host the next holiday party on February 2. Members Aidan Bird and Fernanda Lopez-Morales both found the miniature plastic baby in their rosca.
