Johnathan Lyndale Kirk, better known as his rap moniker, “Dababy” released his new album “KIRK” on September 27, 2019.  “KIRK” is his second studio album. Dababy blew up earlier this year with his hit single “Suge”.

As most rappers do when they have an upcoming album, they advertise the album and release a few singles from the album to get people excited for it.  One of the songs released as a single off of this album was “INTRO”. “INTRO” was released and was a bit different from the upbeat, hype, aggressive rap style Dababy is known for.  “INTRO” was more about moving on with his life after the loss of his father and seeing his daughter grow up and trying to live life his way. It was a good, interesting switch of his usual rap style and gave hope for this new album to be more than hype music.  However, “INTRO” seems to be the only song that hits this mark. There are a lot of good songs on this album but I was hoping for a more emotional and story driven album. Other notable songs on the album are, “TOES”, “XXL”, and “BOP”. However what I have realized listening to this album all the way through multiple times is that his flow and style are very repetitive.

The album fails to change anything that he has already done in the rap game.  In order to prove himself to this point he needs to branch out to grow more. Dababy’s style of music is very hype driven and upbeat and even “INTRO” follows that trail.  Dababy has had a lot happen in his life that could be the catalyst for an emotional and story driven song but he has failed to do that. Dababy is a phenomenal artist and he is aware of his strengths in his rapping.   All in all, the album “KIRK” is a good hype, exciting, in your face rap album, but do not expect Dababy to get into your feelings or make you think about life while listening to this album.
