Conway Model UN has recently started a successful season with their sweep of Pulaski Academy.
Model UN is a competition where students role-play the policies and politics of nations around the world. There are high school and college Model UN competitions throughout the country and around the world that go against each other. Model UN is essential because it allows students to learn about issues affecting them now and in the future. “I enjoy Model UN because it’s a great way to learn about world politics and international relations—a good excuse to argue with people. I wish more people realized that it’s not nearly as hard as they probably think it is, and it’s so much fun,” Barret Carter, a member of Model UN said.
Many students won awards and shined throughout this competition and organization. Winning best overall, best delegates awards in their respective committees were, Barret Carter in the Security Council, Mustafa Zia in the Economic and Social Council, Elyse Ortega and Ian Lee-Kim in the Social and Human Committee, Hib Shevchenko and Ann al-Uraiby in the Disarmament and Security Council. “For my committee my code legate (Eylse Ortega) and I won the Best Delegate Award for the Republic of Korea! Our committee discussed topics on protecting the lives of journalists and what to do in a world where child labor is on the rise,” Lee-Kim said.
Zia succeeded in Model UN at PA and in the Economic and Social Council. He said, “Model UN has a competition in a couple weeks and expects them to continue their success.” As Model continues throughout their season they plan to continue their success and wins to represent Conway High School. “At our first competition in Pulaski, me and my co-delegate were able to win the Best Delegation award for DISEC. It was very nice because at the end of the session our country teamed up with aliens to take over the world!” Al-Uraiby said.
The group looks forward to continuing their success in future competitions.
