Everyone needs to watch Remember the Titans. It is a powerful film that shows unity, leadership and how people can overcome anything. It is a true story of a high school football team in Virginia that was an all-white school that was forced to integrate. Bringing black and white players together that was unheard of during the time in which this film was set. The movie highlights the challenges of Coach Boone working to get both the white and black players to get along and play for each other.
My favorite thing from this movie is how it portrays sports as a place to bring people together with a common goal even when the whole world is saying otherwise. It also does a great job showing the social tensions at the time while sharing a message of hope and faith that white and blacks can get along. Also it shows how when you try to get to know people who you never thought you would like you could turn out to be best friends. In the movie Gerry Bertier was an all-state D-end who ran the defense before they integrated and once they integrated he was forced to share a room with Julius Campbell who was a black D-end. These two fought with each other until the coach made them do multiple practices daily until they got along. This forced them to get to know each other and they became best friends, even attending church with each other’s families. To avoid spoilers, I will say their friendship is solidified during an intense scene in the movie where Campbellgoes as far as to call Bertier his brother.
Rememer the Titans is not just a sports movie but highlights race relations and shows the power of unity. The lessons are timeless and you can use the things you learn in this movie in your real world everyday life.
