For a while, Marco Rivera-Suarez was mostly known for being part of the band. But this year, he decided he wanted to be recognized for more. “Over the years I’ve had it kinda tough, and I’ve been known really just for the band, and I decided, okay, I wanna be known for more, so I went big and ran for vice president,” Rivera-Suarez says.
Winning the election was a proud moment, but he doesn’t see it as the finish line. “It made me feel happy, but like it’s nothing too big, it’s just a stepping stone,” he explains.
As vice president, Rivera-Suarez already knows what he wants to focus on. His top concern is the long lunch lines. He also hopes to make school more welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
Balancing this new role with schoolwork and activities isn’t easy, but Rivera Suarez enjoys staying busy. Along with the student council, he is part of band, robotics, Beta Club, and AV productions, and he’s also thinking about joining Model United Nations. Having a full schedule, he says, pushes him to keep improving in all areas.
His responsibilities don’t stop with meetings and planning. Right now, he and the rest of the student council are preparing for big events like the homecoming dance and the pep rally, which even includes learning a dance.
To Rivera-Suarez, being vice president means more than holding a title. He sees it as a way to grow into a better person while helping make school a place where students can enjoy it and feel included.
