After all the homecoming hype for the game between the Wampus Cats (5-1) and the Grizzlies (5-1), the game got off to a slow start. A first half plagued by turnovers would bring both teams down to earth. Conway was forced to punt on their opening drive, while Northside fumbled on the goaline during their opening drive. The Wampus Cats looked to capitalize off of the Grizzly turnover as senior Jovoni Johnson targeted wide receiver Will McKenna in the end zone, but would be picked off in the end zone.

After a lackluster first quarter, the Grizzlies would score the first points of the game in the second quarter, thanks to a touchdown pass from Derrick “deuce” Wise. On the very next drive, Conway would score on a 6 yard touchdown run from senior Cary McClain. After another touchdown pass from Wise, the Grizzlies would go up 13-7 at the half.

Northside came out firing on their first drive after halftime, going up by 14 after a 39 yard touchdown pass from Wise and a successful 2 point conversion. Conway would then take over deep in their own territory. On a drive that didn’t look promising, Cary McClain would find a hole and show off his speed for a 76 yard touchdown run. This play would shift the momentum to the Wampus Cats, where it stayed the rest of the night.

Conway posted an impressive second half, outscoring Northside 28-8. Cary McClain, the star running back for the cats, led the team in rushing with 179 yards on 20 attempts, adding 2 touchdowns on the ground. The do-it-all quarterback, Jovoni Johnson, added 103 yards on the ground. The Wampus Cats as a team ran for 320 yards on 51 total attempts.

The 6-1 Wampus Cats will travel to 7A Central opponent Little Rock Central this Friday to take on the 1-5-1 (0-4) Tigers.
