Senior Varsity athlete Blake Kordsmeier says his passion for sports is what gets him up in the morning. But it hasn’t always been easy for him. When Kordsmeier was 12 he almost lost this passion for through a tragic accident.
It was a hot summer day. “I found myself bored out of my mind,” Kordsmeier said. So, he decided to go do something he hadn’t done in a while, a bike ride. It started as fun, as he biked all through his neighborhood until he reached the top of a hill. He decided to just go for it and speed down. But that was the biggest mistake of his life. The next thing he knew, he was diving face-first into a sharp rock. “All I could feel was pain and a dark warm liquid was running down my face,” Kordsmeier recalls. He was immediately rushed to the hospital by his mom. “That was nothing less than a miracle that you didn’t lose your eye,” The doctor said, shaking his head in disbelief. Soon, Kordsmeier got to go home and start his recovery.
Kordsmeier recounts the accident as his most jarring memory. “Even though it was a hard time for me, I think that it helped me in future sports to persist and keep going even when I get hurt,” Kordsmeier said. This story teaches us a lesson of perseverance and we can admire Kordsmeier’s ability to get up and try again.
