Are Lockers Still Needed?

The movies do a great job at making the smallest things look like the biggest need. For example, everyone knows that one scene where different students visit their lockers during class change. Let’s be real… life is fast moving and the need for another pit stop in the middle of a school day is just unnecessary. High school students carry backpacks all day long with every necessity they may need. The question is, why are lockers still an option in the main hallways?

The capacity of any school varies but the concept of using vital space for something useless seems silly. The space in between the walls is taken up for lockers when it should really be used to expand school hallways and allow a better flow of traffic. Schools money is being invested in buying, fixing and keeping up with lockers that are hardly occupied. High schools all over the country are beginning to take them down so why aren’t we at CHS?

The thing is that today students work is easily accessed through laptops provided by the schools or class copies of books, which leads to a growing generation of students that don’t use their lockers any more. Students would rather spend their time socializing between classes rather than trying to open a locker using a long code. The need for something like a locker is slowly decreasing as new and better things such as being able to carry a backpack and portable technology takes that locker trip out of the picture.

Going forward schools are starting to take out lockers and the end of an era is coming around as time goes by. Is there still a need for lockers and will it make that much of a difference if they are stopped being put into schools?
