I strongly believe that schools should prioritize offering healthier food options. The current standard of many school lunches often includes processed foods high in sugar, sodium, and unhealthy fats. These meals don’t provide the necessary nutrients that children need to thrive both physically and academically. By investing in healthier options, schools can play a crucial role in shaping better eating habits from a young age.
Schools need to focus more on less processed foods in school meals. For example, a very common food in day to day school lunch that is processed is the chicken nuggets, pizza, and frozen meals. These foods are processed because they undergo an alteration from what they were originally and then these “processed” versions of them are created. Processed foods can have multiple effects on students such as increasing obesity, poor mental health, and increasing likelihoods of developing diabetes.
One of the most significant benefits of improved school meals is the positive impact on students’ health. A balanced diet can lead to better physical health, reducing the risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease later in life. Studies have shown, such as the study Diet Quality and Academic Performance by Michelle D. Florence, a direct correlation between nutrition and academic performance. Students who eat healthier meals tend to have better concentration, improved memory, and higher test scores.
Ultimately, providing healthier food in schools is an investment in our children’s future. It not only promotes their physical well-being but also supports their ability to learn and succeed. By making this change, schools can set a positive example and help create a generation of individuals who understand the importance of healthy eating habits.
