This year’s Super Bowl halftime show sparked mixed reactions, from love to lots of hate.
I am amongst the people who absolutely loved the show. Bad Bunny’s performance embraced many different aspects of Hispanic culture that I am used to, and seeing it on such a large stage was important. He also brought out lots of different aspects of his upbringing in Puerto Rico.
An interesting choice was bringing out American vocalist Lady Gaga, who not many people expected to be his guest. Together they sang her popular “Die With A Smile” with a Latin twist, and it was a nice touch. The decision to include Gaga makes sense because she supported him when speaking out against ICE.
Lady Gaga was not the only celebrity who showed up alongside Bad Bunny; he had many Hispanic celebrities as backup dancers, including Karol G and Jessica Alba. Ricky Martin also made an appearance, featuring his song Lo Que Le Paso En Hawaii. The performance overall included nods to his native Puerto Rico, more specifically, to his neighborhood and what it looked like when he was growing up. He closed the performance by ensuring every country in the Americas was mentioned, and let those who are immigrants in the United States know they are heard, and he stands with them, as he has done in the past. He also mentioned the countries that are not Latin countries, the United States and Canada, letting everyone know he wants everyone to know we should all be united, and made sure to know that are of a different sexuality he stands with them as well.
It was beautiful to see the mix of his music and the inclusion he wants to see in the world. Bad Bunny, hats off to you for a legendary half-time show.
